Excerpt

Prologue:

James is not a hero. He’s a feral accident with the power of a super being.

James spent five years surviving a forbidden wilderness, forged into a reality-bending force of nature by a primordial power. Now, he’s back in civilization with two simple goals: find a quiet place to sleep and stay far away from humanity.

His plan for isolation lasts exactly until he meets Jenny.

Stubborn, messy, and relentlessly optimistic, Jenny looks at the scarred, cynical powerhouse and decides he’s her new project. Dragged kicking and screaming into the "bewildering hell" of city life and social etiquette, James is a fish out of water - if the fish could level a skyscraper.

But when a shadowy underworld kingpin targets Jenny’s family, the quiet life is over. To protect the only person who sees the man behind the monster, James must unleash the powers he mastered through brutal trial and error. The city whispers about a new guardian - an anonymous "Angel in a Suit" - but the truth is much more dangerous.

Chapter 1: A Pissed Off Angel

The Angel was pissed.

Not “I stubbed my toe” pissed. Not “someone ate my leftovers” pissed. We’re talking “human tornado of pure, divine rage” pissed.

Power rolled off him in waves. The plates and glasses in the kitchen cabinet started rattling like they were at a heavy metal concert or some sort of mild earthquake. The air in the room got thick - the kind of thick where you feel like you’re breathing soup.

Mr. and Mrs. Jones, were pissed off, but now fear replaced anger. It wasn't just "our daughter is kidnapped" fear. It was "oh crap, we’re standing next to a nuclear reactor that's about to go off and it has a face" fear. They could feel in their bones that this guy didn't need a weapon. A bad thought or a stray wave from him might just unmake them.

Seeing their faces - pale, eyes wide like dinner plates - he forced himself to chill. Or at least, to try to look chilled. He took a deep breath. The pressure in the room dropped from “crushed by a mountain” to just “slightly sat on by a large dog.”

“Look,” he said, his voice calmer but still buzzing with energy. “There’s something you don’t know about me. And you gotta keep it secret. Can you do that?”

Mr. Jones just nodded, too freaked out to speak.

“Okay,” James said. “Don’t scream.”

Then, right in front of them, he… changed.

His skin got darker. His eyes lit up like two blue LED lights. And big, glorious, feathery wings burst from his back, filling the living room.

The Joneses’ jaws hit the floor. Hard. Mrs. Jones squeaked. Mr. Jones looked like he’d just been told the sky was actually green.

It was him. The Angel. The flying, crime-flying legend from the news. And he was standing right in front of them, a potential son-in-law.

The Angel didn’t have time to explain. He had a fiancée to save. A wife to save.

“I’ll bring her back,” he said. And then - poof - he vanished. Just gone. The crushing pressure vanished with him, leaving the Joneses alone, clinging to each other, wondering if they’d just hallucinated the whole thing.

Meanwhile, On a Rooftop

James - well, the Angel- appeared on the tallest building in the city. He knelt down, placed a hand on the rooftop, and listened.

He wasn’t listening with his ears. He was listening with… everything. His senses fanned out across the city like a sonar net, searching for one specific heartbeat. Ba-bump. Ba-bump. Jenny’s rhythm.

Ten minutes. Nothing.

“Okay, Plan B,” he muttered. “The hop-and-search.”

He launched himself into the air, wings snapping open. He landed on the next skyscraper. Listened. Nothing. Third building. Fourth. Fifth.

By the seventh rooftop, desperation was kicking in. His calm was cracking. Where is she?!

And then… he heard it. Faint, scared, but steady. Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

There.

He shot toward the sound like a blue-eyed comet.

The Not-So-Great Neighborhood

He landed in front of a rundown building that looked like it had given up on life years ago. The whole neighborhood screamed “bad guy headquarters.” No kids playing. No nice grannies watering plants. Just rust, broken windows, and the feeling that you might catch a stray bullet just for standing there.

Typical. Bad guys had zero creativity.

But James didn’t have time for a neighborhood review. He followed the heartbeat inside.

The building was a parade of horrible. Every room he passed - without even being seen - showed him something worse. It was like a gallery of “Terrible Things People Do To Each Other.” His anger, which was already on simmer, started to boil.

He finally reached a room at the end of a foul-smelling hall. He peered inside.

And saw a guy leaning over Jenny, who was tied to a chair.

That was it.

The last straw.

The final page of James’s patience.

Something in him snapped. Not just anger. Something deeper, older, and way more dangerous unlocked inside him. It roared to be let out.

The Angel’s eyes blazed like two fallen stars.

“Hey,” he said, his voice low enough to shake dust from the ceiling.

The man turned around.

He had exactly one second to see his doom before all hell - or rather, one very angry angel - broke loose.
