Chapter 1: The Little Things

Casi woke up feeling like she'd been asleep for a hundred years. Actually, it had only been twenty-five hours, but after everything her body had been through? Twenty-five hours of uninterrupted sleep felt like winning the lottery.

She stretched her arms above her head and paused. Wait. Her ceiling looked different today. The light hitting it looked... golden. Everything looked golden, actually. She blinked a few times, rubbed her eyes, and sat up.

The sun streaming through her window wasn't just warm. It felt like it was hugging her. Every single ray of light seemed to reach out and touch her skin like old friends saying welcome back.

Okay, Casi thought. That's new.

She swung her legs out of bed and immediately noticed something else. Her feet touched the floor and she felt everything. The texture of the rug. The coolness of the wooden floor beneath it. The distant vibration of someone walking downstairs. It was like someone had turned up the volume on all her senses.

And then there were the wings.

They flickered behind her - feathers made golden hue. Casi twisted around to look at them and nearly fell over. Still not used to those, though she could unfold them back to her body - which didn't make sense.

"Okay," she said out loud, mostly to hear her own voice and make sure she was still her. "Okay. We're dealing with this."

She stood up carefully, testing her balance. The wings folded against her back naturally, like they'd always been there. Which was weird, because they definitely had not always been there. Three days ago she'd been a hybrid. Now she was... something else. Something with a voice in her head that remembered the birth of stars.

But right now, at this exact moment, Casi didn't want to think about any of that.

She wanted breakfast.

Walking downstairs was an experience.

Every step felt deliberate. Every breath felt precious. Casi caught herself touching the wooden railing just to feel it under her fingers. She paused on the landing to watch dust particles floating in a sunbeam and almost cried. They were just dancing there, so carefree, so beautiful, and when had she ever stopped to notice dust before?

Never, that's when.

She reached the bottom of the stairs and found her mother in the kitchen, stirring something on the stove. Caroline turned around, coffee cup in hand, and froze.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Casi walked forward and wrapped her arms around her mother like she hadn't seen her in years. Not a quick hug. Not an awkward pat-on-the-back situation. A real hug. The kind where you squeeze tight and don't let go.

Caroline stood there stiffly for a second, clearly confused, then relaxed into it. "Sweetie? You okay?"

"Mhm." Casi's voice was muffled against her mother's shoulder. "Just... give me a minute."

A minute turned into two. Two turned into three. Caroline's coffee grew cold in her hand, but she didn't complain. She just held her daughter and let her feel whatever she needed to feel.

Eventually, Casi pulled back. Her eyes were golden now - both of them, glowing faintly - and Caroline had to look away because staring into them felt like falling into something too deep to climb out of.

"Your eyes," Caroline said softly.

"I know." Casi blinked, and the glow dimmed slightly. "Sorry. Can't control it yet."

"Don't apologize." Caroline set down her cold coffee and cupped Casi's face in her hands. "You're here. You're awake. That's all that matters."

Casi nodded, but she was already distracted by the toast sitting on the counter. It was just regular toast - brown, slightly burnt on one corner, probably made by someone who wasn't paying attention - and it looked like the most incredible thing she'd ever seen.

She picked it up slowly. Brought it to her nose. Inhaled.

Bread. Fire. Butter. Salt.

It smelled like a memory she didn't know she had. Like something ancient and simple and good.

"Are you... smelling the toast?" Caroline asked carefully.

"Yes." Casi took a bite and her eyes fluttered closed. "Oh my god."

"Is it good toast?"

"It's the best toast I've ever had in my entire life."

Caroline watched her daughter eat that slightly burnt piece of toast like it was a five-star meal, and something in her chest tightened. She didn't know exactly what Casi had been through during those trials. She didn't know what it felt like to die and come back, to have an ancient power waking up inside you, to carry light that made vampires and werewolves keep their distance.

But she knew that look. It was the look of someone who'd almost lost everything and just realized how much they had.

Nathan found her an hour later, sitting on the back porch with her face turned up toward the sun.

He stood in the doorway for a moment, just watching. Her wings were out - flickering gently, with a golden hue. Her golden hair caught the sunlight and threw it back, making her look like she belonged in a painting. Or a dream. Or somewhere far away from all the chaos they'd been through.

"You're supposed to be resting," he said finally.

Casi opened one golden eye. "I was resting. Now I'm sunning. Like a lizard."

Nathan laughed and sat down next to her. "How do you feel?"

"Honestly?" She thought about it. "Weird. Everything feels... more. The sun on my skin. The grass under my feet. That bird over there -" she pointed at a sparrow pecking at something in the yard " - I can hear its heartbeat. Is that normal?"

"Probably not." Nathan leaned back on his hands. "But normal's overrated."

Casi smiled. It was small, but it was real. "You get it."

"I get it." He'd been through his own transformation. The golden wolf with wings and a halo - the form he couldn't control, the power that drained years from his life every time he used it. He understood what it felt like to wake up different. To not recognize yourself in the mirror. To hear a voice in your head that might be you and might be something else.

They sat in comfortable silence for a while. Casi went back to sunning. Nathan watched the sparrow. Somewhere inside the house, someone dropped a pan and swore loudly.

Normal things. Little things. Things Casi used to take for granted.

"I used to watch movies about Navy SEALs," Casi said suddenly.

Nathan turned to look at her. "Random."

"There was this one movie about the first woman to join their training. Before that, no women. She was the first." Casi's eyes were still closed, face still tilted toward the sun. "They didn't give her any special treatment. No separate rooms. No separate bathrooms. Five hundred push-ups a day. Running on the beach carrying an electric pole. Those dudes were determined to break her."

"Sounds brutal."

"It was." Casi opened her eyes and looked at him. "There's this scene where they're all sitting on the beach at six PM, waiting for dismissal. It's pouring rain. Freezing cold. And the guys are just... sleeping. Sitting up, rain was pounding on them, and they were sleeping."

Nathan nodded slowly. "When you're that exhausted, your body doesn't care about comfort anymore. It just takes sleep wherever it can get it."

"Exactly." Casi looked back at the sun. "I didn't understand that when I watched the movie. I thought it was just a Hollywood drama. But now?" She exhaled slowly. "Now I get it. After everything I went through - the trials, the dying, the waking up with a powerful being in my head - I get it. Sleep is a gift. Toast is a gift. Sun on my face is a gift."

She turned to him, and for a moment her golden eyes weren't scary or overwhelming. They were just... warm.

"I'm not taking any of it for granted again."

Nathan reached out and took her hand. "Good."

They stayed like that until the sun started to dip toward the horizon. People came and went - Alex poked his head out to check on her, then retreated when he saw Nathan was there. Caroline brought out lemonade and didn't stay long. Even Claytonford appeared briefly at the window, watching his granddaughter with an expression no one could quite read.

Casi noticed them all. Heard their heartbeats. Felt their presence like gentle pressure against her skin. But she didn't let it bother her.

She had Nathan's hand in hers. She had the last of the lemonade in a glass by her feet. She had a whole world of little things to appreciate.

And somewhere, in the back of her mind, the Aethel stirred.

Enjoy this, it whispered. Rest while you can.

Casi squeezed Nathan's hand tighter.

She didn't answer. Not yet. There would be time for answers later.

Right now, she had sunsets.
